Danke Anke

Some days things are just perfectly aligned; yesterday was one of those days.

Bridge to Canada and Campobello Island, home of the Roosevelt cottage
Ferry to Deer Island: poor chap (Peter) just wanted to enjoy the passage

Deer Island was so scenic with these incredible wharfs built to deal with twenty-foot tides

Deer Island at low tide

The woman working on the ferry suggested some accommodation on the island. I may have misunderstood as when we got to Bella’s store I asked about rooms and the owner just about fell over laughing. Fortunately Charles was talking to Mark who mentioned the Inn and off we go.

Turns out Mark called Anke and she’s waiting for us. “I have a room and can offer you the soup I made today but no beer.” Then she’s off in her car and returns with beer she borrowed from a friend. We had the whole place to ourselves and what a place it was.

Anke

Anke is from the former East Germany and just the most amazing host one could hope for. I unfortunately mentioned her having experienced WWII and she was aghast that I thought she could be that old.

The following morning there’s a knock at our door and there’s Anke letting us know that breakfast is on the table. She also had a live lobster and a squid, the latter her son caught the night before.

  1. Looking great Charles!!! So jealous of the scenery you are seeing and will continue to see! Love the rimmed hat! Between you and Paul, so far this has definitely been the good, the bad, and maybe the ugly?!? (bike troubles and all!). Look forward to the next post! Keep up the great work guys!
