Day Two

Bill was on for bacon and eggs in the morning

Everyone appeared to have had a good night’s sleep and I put on coffee immediately while waiting for breakfast. The weather report was for a tail wind, a welcomed bit of information. Charles seemed to be happy with his new tent (the Swedish Hilleberg Anjan) and Bill too with the cozy MSR Hubba NX. Discussion of my 20 year-old MEC Tairn 3 was minimal; had it rained though, it would have been a different story.

Charles is always up for the challenge

Smiths Falls via Rideau Ferry

Bill’s sister-in-law’s husband’s cousin twice removed is the chef at a restaurant in Smiths Falls so we’re off (not too early not too bright) in that direction. Great roads all along the way to Rideau Ferry.

Bill and I discussing the route we’re going to take out of Smiths Falls

Lunch was great out on a sunny, windy patio. The deep-fried pickles were extraordinary. On the way out of town we found a secondary route that went under the CP Rail line through an old viaduct. This road eventually ended and we had no choice but to get on Roger Stevens. Thankfully it was recently paved with a great shoulder and the aforementioned tailwind. Until we reached the Ottawa city limits that is 😠

Note the “bicycle friendly community”

The remainder of the road is narrow and we had one close call. I suggested taking Malakoff to Richmond where we stop at the Roadhouse for the last supper.

Charles and I said good-bye to Bill at the Bruce Pit and by now, even with the tailwind, it’s dark. Just shy of one hundred kilometers each way! Great trip
