Am I too old for camping?

The young couple running Ray’s Cottages were great. Had a great lakeside site and, wait for it, showers! They wished me well in the morning as I made my way bright and early.

Was hoping to make it to Brighton for breakfast at 40 km but stopped in Consecon for chocolate milk and cheese curds – the breakfast of champions.

A break at the beginning of the Trent-Severn to watch the swing bridge open.

Such cool engineering

When Penny, Grace and I cycled from Cobourg to Kingston we decided that taking the path/road on the north side of this canal would be a nice break from traffic. It turned out to be a gravel road with cavernous potholes filled with water. Quite the challenge.

Moving noticeably slower today. Found a great café in Brighton and an open public toilet. It’s sad, but you should have seen how excited I was when I spotted a porta-potty in Cobourg!

Some beautiful scenery along Lake Ontario and the main roads today were fantastic; huge bike lanes and well maintained.

Presqu’île cycle route

After Cobourg the headwinds picked up and my energy did not. Arrived in Port Hope and found some shade in a park. I love this town because the two rail roads fly over the town about fifty feet in the air (I have the same affinity for trains as Sheldon).

It’s still about forty kilometres to the provincial park as I’m looking for a place for dinner. There are few places between here and the park and I’m not ready to head out either. The Carlyle looks interesting. I go by and they have a beautiful covered patio out back where I can park my bike and still keep an eye on it. Had the most terrific dinner (beef tenderloin) and on a whim decided to stay here.

Bowman’s brewery

I’ll worry about the extra distance I’ll need to cover to Matt’s place tomorrow. For now, there’s a bathtub with my name on it (and a ring soon).

The Carlyle
Can’t beat a hotel that encourages you to take your bike inside!
