I have the power

Bill wanted me to blog about packing my gear on my bike; I may do so but wanted to talk quickly about how I’m producing my own energy on this trip.

First of all I have a very efficient generator on my front hub. Not the kind that rubs on the tire 🤓

Hub and headlight

This provides AC power to the front light. This light converts AC to DC. There is a cable that runs to the handlebars to turn the light off and on. A USB port is attached to the switch.

What I do is run a cable from the USB port to a battery pack. This has two ports of its own from which I charge either my phone or my Garmin watch (or both). So far I’m keeping ahead of my usage. Any excess energy produced gets stored in the battery for the evening.

The “dash”

Here’s a high-quality schematic 😏

  1. Huh. Funny. We’re taking advantage to the downtime to finally clean up a ton of junk. Sarah’s going through the kids’ old artwork and some of Theo’s drawings from when he was 4 look just like your schematic.

Thoughts?
